So far all the species we’ve looked at have been from Mintop. The spleech, however, are the only species to appear in Slubes that are not from Mintop. I don’t think the name of their planet was ever specified in Slubes, but it’s probably very far away. Quoted from the species appendix in Slubes:
Spleech have tall, elongated heads with similarly-elongated eyes. A hard flap of skin covers the back of their heads and most of the front, and a line of dots around the bases of their thin necks is used for speaking. Their torsos are very petite and radiates out to four tentacles. Their society was conquered by The Conqueror thousands of years ago, and now nearly all of them work under his command. Spleech never know their parents but instead have a family unit consisting of three to seven siblings. Their average lifespan can range from 30 to hundreds of years and beyond.
The outward appearance of the spleech, as quoted from my personal encyclopedia: “Most of a spleech’s body is radial. Spleech are short, and 4/5 of their height comes from their elongated heads. They have two similarly-elongated eyes (oh gosh they must use = for smilies) and a hard flap of skin covers most of the back and part of the front. The bottoms of their heads connect to a neck about the same height as the body below it, which is made up of a small core that radiates out to four tentacles. Just above these tentacles is a line of holes used for speaking and ingesting nutrients. There’s another hole on their underside, gee I wonder what this is used for!! Their entire body is gray in color.”
Spleech are hermaphrodites. They don’t even have a concept of gender in their society; they just mate with whomever! (This further confuses the question of whether The Conqueror is a spleech, as he refers to himself as male, though it seems plausible this identity was picked up from a conquered society with genders.) (The funny thing is, banana slugs are hermaphrodites, but the main species of Slubes, the… slubes, are not! Go figure!!)
Anyway, after mating, spleech lay 3-7 eggs in water and then leave them. The eggs eventually hatch into a new family of siblings, aaand now would be a good time to transition into history and culture!
History and Culture
Spleech do not have a typical mother and father relationship, as when eggs are laid the spleech leave them and are unlikely to ever actually meet their children. Instead, spleech have a strong sibling relationship with their families, the 3-7 spleech siblings working together to survive and staying together for all their lives. Marriage is an alien concept to them—mates rarely stay together, instead remaining with their siblings, although on occasion two families have merged into one (usually those with fewer siblings, such as 3 or 4).
Of course, this was all thrown out after The Conqueror became the potentate, the despot tyrant, the emperor, the generalissimo, the high muckamuck! The Conqueror broke apart family units, instead having spleech work in larger cross-family groups. Although there are vestiges of the old sibling family strength remaining, this structure is largely gone now, and almost every spleech now works under The Conquerors command, with all the other spleech probably living on planets ruled by him anyway.
