All right, if I’ve counted it up right, this should be posted on December 1st, and NaNoWriMo is over. How did I do? I have no idea, I wrote this before it started! Anyway, onto the profile; today is the chameleon, the second species (after last week’s turtle) to come from a continental land. Quoted from the species appendix in Slubes:
Chameleons on Mintop, like Earth chameleons, come in a range of colors. They also have colored patterns on their sides. They can also change their coloring to match their surroundings, becoming completely invisible to the naked eye, though the aptitude varies among them, with some requiring intense concentration to do it and others doing it accidentally. They come from the nearest continent, as opposed to the islands the story takes place on. Their average lifespan is about 90 years.
The outward appearance of the chameleon, as quoted from my personal encyclopedia: “Chameleons, about the same height as slubes, come in a range of colors and have lines on their sides that also range in color and pattern. The top of their head has two crests, and their eyelids are conjoined (like actual chameleons). Their tail, fairly stiff, is about half the length of their body. They lack spines on their back. The rest is generally equivalent to Earth chameleons, though they stand on two legs and their appendages are similar to human placement.”
History and Culture
Across the ocean east of Hackney and Interp is the chameleon’s home country of Lanc’teal; the chameleons were the first continental species to settle on the islands. In the past they had many strange customs, but in the modern age many of them have been abandoned and forgotten. One of the few to remain is the custom for chameleon names to always feature three consonants grouped together with an apostrophe separating two of them from one, just like their home country.
